There are many ways my Christian walk has helped me in the practice of medicine. My work involves the specialty of the care of women, specifically their care during childbirth and problems of the reproductive organs. This naturally brings me into areas where improper living has taken a toll in women's lives. My relationship with Jesus has helped me to counsel from a Christian perspective rather than that of a humanist. It has helped me also to find appropriate ways to share the Lord with people through personal sharing, Christian literature, and praying with my patients. In my practice I have opportunities to witness many miracles in the lives of my patients. The Lord does use medicine and related fields of healing to facilitate some of these; but I am convinced that some were the direct hand of God. I have personally seen patients healed of cancer, tumors, pregnancies salvaged and brought to happy fruition, as well as many other medical and emotional problems resolved. I have always felt privileged to be allowed the opportunity to minister to the needs of others through my profession as a doctor. As Jesus has become an active partner in my practice, this privilege has taken on a new and more significant meaning. Being a Christian physician does not always bring favor to the doctor from patients or others. When a doctor takes a stand on Christian principles in dealing with concerns such as pre- and extramarital sex, abortion, and the sanctity of human life, many people will be offended by his or her position. The more open the doctor is on these issues, the greater this effect may be on his or her practice. Some women find my position on pre-marital sex or abortion as an infringement on the rights of women to govern their lives. The Lord is always faithful because I have found that while some women avoid me because of my Christian stand, many other women find my standards minister to their needs. I am convinced that as long as I stand firmly upon the Word of God, He will continue to support me and to use me in His plan to care for the needs of others. One of the greatest privileges I have is to care for many women who have found themselves in situations of unwanted pregnancies. Our family, my practice, our marriage, and my own personal walk with the Lord speak clearly to the Scriptures from the third chapter of Ephesians, verse twenty: "To Him who by the power at work within us is able to do far more abundantly than all that we ask or think." |
